The Initial Consultation

What happens during the initial consultation?

Your consultation begins before we meet. To focus and prepare us for our time together, you will complete a thorough intake questionnaire that I will carefully review prior to our appointment.

During our meeting, we will clarify the precise challenges you are facing as well as your goals for treatment. I will learn more about your symptoms, your overall health, psychiatric history, prior therapy experiences, and family psychiatric history. Crucially, I will get to know YOU. We will explore the many facets of your life that may support your healing or contribute to your challenges.

While conducting the consultation, we will start to build our therapeutic relationship. I will create a non-judgmental space where you can feel truly heard and understood, and we will get a sense of what it is like to spend time together. We will also establish whether my specific skills and personality style serve your needs.

We will typically conclude the consultation by discussing my diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations. Depending on the complexity of your case, the full details of this may occur during our second appointment. If my skill set and services don’t fit your specific needs, I will make recommendations to point you in the right direction.
